Symposium:Revision of a Hip Resurfacing is as Good as a Primary Hip Replacement. 6 min With young patients, the potential need for revision surgery within the patient’s lifetime is high. The use of hip resurfacing in the first surgery preserves the bone stock and increases the chances of a successful second operation.
Presentation: (2/26) Are Patients with Osteonecrosis Suitable Candidates for Hip Resurfacing? An Analysis of 84 hips. In Venetian Ballroom I. 6 mins 14:30 Whether the avascular femoral head of a patient affected with osteonecrosis of the hip is an appropriate support for resurfacing, or not, is a controversial topic. A presentation of the mid-term results from a series of patients with large necrotic defects.
Posters: #PO18: Cementing the Metaphyseal Stem in Metal-on-Metal Resurfacing: When and Why. All Modern resurfacing systems feature a small metaphyseal stem designed to facilitate the alignment of the femoral component during insertion. Cementing this stem increases the area of the bone - cement - component interfaces and enhances initial fixation. This technique is mostly justified with patients at higher risk for early failure. #PO20: Significance of Femoral Neck-Acetabular Cup Impingement in Hip Resurfacing. A radiographic and clinical analysis of cases presenting radiographic signs of bone remodeling, presumably induced by impingement between the acetabular component of the device and the femoral neck, after hip resurfacing.
Scientific Exhibit: 12 Years of Experience with Metal-on-Metal Hybrid Hip Resurfacing. History, development, results, and future of the hip resurfacing procedure.
The staff of JRI is engaged in various research studies, including: improving long term joint replacement durability by selective use of new replacement bearing technology, histological characterization of implant fixation, relationship between wear debris and aseptic loosening.
