With young patients, the potential need for revision surgery within the patient’s lifetime is high. The use of hip resurfacing in the first surgery preserves the bone stock and increases the chances of a successful second operation.

Whether the avascular femoral head of a patient affected with osteonecrosis of the hip is an appropriate support for resurfacing, or not, is a controversial topic. A presentation of the mid-term results from a series of patients with large necrotic defects.

#PO18: Cementing the Metaphyseal Stem in Metal-on-Metal Resurfacing:
When and Why.
All Modern resurfacing systems feature a small metaphyseal stem designed to facilitate the alignment of the femoral component during insertion. Cementing this stem increases the area of the bone - cement - component interfaces and enhances initial fixation. This technique is mostly justified with patients at higher risk for early failure.
